Karachi: Hydrant mafia beats KWSB team
KARACHI: As reported by The News on Tuesday, a Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) team was beaten up by the hydrant mafia, the SITE Town police said on Monday. The KWSB team comprised Superintendent Engineer (SE) Anwar Saeed Malik, Executive Engineer Asif Qadri, SE Hydrants Iftikhar, KWSB Chief Security Officer Major (retd) Gondal, five private security guards and others. The team reached SITE Town at 9am to disconnect illegal hydrants and water connections; however, a group of men took the team on gunpoint and started beating them up, while the four policemen deputed to guard them fled the scene. The attackers then took Malik and Qadri to an undisclosed location and continued to thrash them. The culprits kept receiving instructions about the engineers over the phone, and it was on the order of the unidentified person on the phone that the victims were being kept alive. However, the engineers managed to escape and reach the police station where FIR No 773/10 was registered against four unidentified men. The KWSB management has strongly condemned the incident and demanded effective security from the law enforcement agencies. Without protective measures, the water board cannot ensure stopping water theft, which in turn would increase water shortage in many areas of the city, the management said. Sources said the hydrant mafia in SITE Town had tampered with a 48-inch diameter water supply line, causing acute shortage in water supply to the main industrial hub of the country and the adjoining residential settlements.
