Lahore: WAF urges PA speaker for MPA’s arrest
LAHORE: According to the Dawn News, the Women’s Action Forum (WAF) has urged the Punjab Assembly speaker to issue his permission for arrest of MPA Haroon Sultan, who had allegedly tortured his pregnant wife resulting in miscarriage. The police have registered a case against the MPA, but did not arrest him as the privileges conferred on the elected members disallow their detention until a formal permission by the speaker. In a letter to Speaker Rana Iqbal, WAF working committee member Neelam Husain said the privilege to legislators was conferred on a presumption of decent and law abiding behaviour on their part. “But, as Mr Sultan is accused of torturing his wife, who is admitted to a local hospital in a serious condition, there should be no justification for any attempt by the provincial legislative body to protect a law-maker by withholding the permission for his arrest,” the letter said. It urged the speaker to grant the police permission at the earliest for the arrest of the accused and investigation into the torture allegations.
