Lahore: CJ’s court assailed by Lawyers
LAHORE: As reported by the Dawn News on Friday, Infuriated members of the Lahore Bar Association on Thursday attacked the courtroom of Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif in an attempt to force their entry into it to remind the honourable judge of the ‘promise’ he had reportedly made to the lawyers that District and Sessions Judge Zawar Ahmad Sheikh would be transferred. Later, district bar president Sajid Bashir, its other office-bearers and a number of lawyers were arrested during a police raid at Aiwan-i-Adl while holding a press conference against the LHC chief justice. Cases were registered against the lawyers under the Anti-Terrorism Act and some sections of the PPC. The episode started when LBA leaders at a general house meeting announced that a rally would be taken out from Aiwan-i-Adl to GPO Chowk expressing their anger over non-acceptance of their longstanding demand despite a three-day deadline they had given to the chief justice. The protesting lawyers, over a hundred in numbers, holding placards and banners, marched towards GPO Chowk. They were led by Bar President Sajid Bashir, senior vice-president Lubna Mahmood, vice-president Zulfiqar Maniki, secretary-I Qasim Buttar, secretary-II Shakil Gondal, former vice-president MR Awan and former secretary Latif Sarra. They chanted slogans against Justice Sharif and D&SJ Zawar Sheikh. Some of the lawyers also used filthy language against both the judges during the protest, reminding one of their agitation against former president Pervez Musharraf. The lawyers also burnt an effigy of the D&SJ outside the court of the chief justice. Facing little resistance from the security personnel deployed at the LHC gate facing GPO Chowk, the charged lawyers gathered outside the Courtroom No-1. Soon some of them pulled down a walkthrough gate installed at the entrance to CJ’s court and tried to enter the courtroom, but failed as its door had already been closed from inside. Though the Elite Force commandos deployed for the CJ’s personal security in view of the alleged threat to his life did not retaliate, they kept blocking the courtroom door like a wall and pushed away the lawyers. Meanwhile, some of the lawyers broke the courtroom’s windowpane with punches. LHC Registrar Abdus Sattar Asghar, who was also present on the spot, tried to stop the violent lawyers from entering the courtroom. However, the chief justice continued with the court proceedings amid ransacking and slogans of lawyers and did not raise the court till the hearing of the last case of the day finished. The lawyers left the premises giving a ‘warning’ to the chief justice to issue transfer order of the D&SJ before their return to Aiwan-i-Adl. Soon after the incident, Justice Sharif convened a meeting of all LHC judges to chalk out a strategy vis-à-vis lawyers highhandedness. It was decided in the judges’ meeting that no leniency would be shown to the attackers, and they would be dealt in accordance with law. They vowed to protect prestige of judges and sanctity of LHC at all cost. CCPO Aslam Tareen, DIG (operations) Rao Sardar Ali Khan, SP (coordination) Sohail Sukhera and other police officers reached the high court.
