Umerkot: Police officer gypped out of Rs4,000
UMERKOT: According to the Dawn News on Thursday, a caller who posed himself as director of the Federal Investigation Agency’s Hyderabad office swindled a police official out of Rs4,000, which he spent on sending credit to a number given by the caller on Wednesday.
Umerkot SPO Iqbal Mangrio told Dawn that he was asked by DPO Haider Sultan to send the credit of Rs2,000 to the cell phone number of director FIA Zulfiqar Ali. The DPO also told him that the director along with one Inspector Zafar Korejo was about to leave for Umerkot to conduct a raid, he said.
He said that he promptly followed the order but was informed 20 minutes later that the credit he had sent earlier did not reach the given number. So, he again sent Rs2,000 credit, he said.
Mr Mangrio said that his inquiries revealed later that this phoney director had first called RPO of Hyderabad from phone number 022-2926200, introduced himself as director of FIA and requested him to order DPO Umerkot to send credit to his cell phone number 03342209318.
The RPO did so without making any inquiries and asked DIG of Mirpurkhas Zone Rasool Bux Sandh to direct the DPO of Umerkot to send the credit. The DPO then directed him, SPO Mangrio, to send it and he did, he said.
Mr Mangrio said that after sending him Rs4,000 credit he kept waiting with three mobiles in a queue at the entry point of the town to welcome the director.
He waited there all the day long but he did not show up and by the evening he grew suspicious about this director and made inquiries about him. He dialled the official number 022-2926200 and was told that no person by the name of Zulfiqar Ali served there as director FIA.
The cell phone number was found to be a double number introduced recently by some cell phone companies to keep the real number hidden. Credit can easily be shifted to the real number from the double number, he said. Mr Mangrio said that he had lodged a case against the fake director Zulfiqar Ali and Inspector Zafar Korejo.
