TT Singh: Police capture armed robbery suspects
TOBA TEK SINGH: As reported by the Dawn News on Monday, the police arrested one of the accused who injured a currency exchange dealer with a gunshot fire on resistance after snatching Rs4.2 million in cash from him on Toba-Gojra Road on Sunday night.
Reports said Chaudhry Munir Ahmad along with his friends, Haji Muhammad Abbas and Haji Abdul Hameed, was on his way to Chichawatni after collecting cash from Faisalabad and Gojra by his car. Near Janiwala railway station, two car riders intercepted their vehicle at pistol point. On offering resistance, one of the robbers fired at Munir Ahmed, injuring him seriously. Later, robbers snatched cash from him and escaped. The injured was admitted to a local hospital. On receiving information, DPO Ahsan Younis reached the spot and took into custody driver Qamar Riaz over suspicion.
During initial investigation, Riaz confessed his involvement in the robbery incident. On his lead, the police raided the house of jeweller Muhammad Hanif in Eidgah locality of Toba and recovered the snatched cash, several cell phones and unlicensed weapons.
The police also arrested Rizwan, the son of main accused Riaz. Raids were on for the arrest of the main accused. Accused Rizwan was involved in snatching purses from school and college girls besides street crimes. He was arrested about three months ago for injuring three youths with gunshot fires over a minor issue.
When a local court released him on bail, his accomplices, brandishing guns, brought him to the town on a vehicle from the district jail in a procession. The police, however, remained a silent spectator all this time. Talking to reporters, the DPO praised the performance of policemen and announced cash prizes and commendation certificates for the police party.
The DPO handed over the cash recovered from the accused to the brother of currency dealer. The DPO refused to accept Rs100,000 prize money from traders saying that it was the duty of the police to arrest the accused and recover cash from them.
