Islamabad: Contractor offering bribe to MNA grabbed
ISLAMABAD: According to the Dawn News on Wednesday, police have arrested a local contractor on the charge of offering bribe to an MNA, allegedly at the suggestion of another MNA, for securing him contracts of development work in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
MNA Bushra Gohar of ANP confirmed to Dawn on Tuesday that Asadullah Khan of Bhara Kahu was arrested overnight on her complaint but declined to reveal the name of the other MNA who, she said, pleaded with her “to withdraw my complaint” against the contractor.
Asadullah Khan, owner of Asad Enterprises, meanwhile has been sent to Adiala Jail by a court on two-day remand.
MNA Bushra Gohar filed her complaint against him with the office of deputy superintendent of police, Parliament Lodges, on October 8. The DSP, Nighat Mujtaba, forwarded the complaint to the Secretariat Police for registration of a case against the contractor.
Ms Gohar, the chairperson of NA standing committee on woman development, told the Police that she received a letter at her Parliament Lodges suite from Asadullah in which he stated that his company was in the field of construction for the last 10 years and had come to know that the prime minister had issued special funds for different schemes in the district of Swabi under the supervision of the MNA.
He requested the MNA to award contracts of the development projects to his company, saying 15 per cent of the amount would be paid to her.
“The company will pay Rs7.5 million to the MNA if she helped it in getting development works worth Rs50 million,” the MNA quoted the contractor as stating in the letter. He also requested the MNA for a 15-20 minute meeting to discuss the matter.
On the other hand, the accused in his statement told the Police that he met the MNA at the lodges with the help of a brother of another MNA. During the meeting, all matters, including the amount to be paid in return for the contract, were discussed, he added.
At the end of the meeting, the MNA asked him to prepare a proposal for contract and send it to her for approval, the accused said. But the MNA lodged a compliant against him which resulted in his arrest.
When contacted, the MNA denied meeting Asadullah Khan and said he talked to her through intercom from the room of another MNA and requested for a meeting which she refused and told him to send her in writing what he wanted to discuss.
“Within 15 to 20 minutes, he sent a letter offering the bribe,” Ms Gohar added.
