PESHAWAR: According to the Dawn Newson,police reported killing a militant who hurled a hand grenade at a checkpost on Peshawar-Bara Road in the limits of Sarband police station on Wednesday.
Police constable Asad Khan and a passer-by were injured in the grenade attack on the Bara Qadeemi checkpost.
Superintendent Police Shafiullah Khan told Dawn that the militant, identified as Aurangzeb of Bar Kandi Sulemankhel, Badbher, fled after throwing the grenade but police chased him.
“The militant fired at the police party and then took shelter in a house. He refused to surrender and as a result lost his life,” the officer said.
He said that police recovered another hand grenade and a pistol from his possession. Quoting eyewitnesses, the SP said that the militant had come there on a motorcycle with his two accomplices. “But the other two persons managed to disappear,” he said.
Police conducted search operation in Sarband, Shaikhan, Batathal and Sango areas to arrest suspected militants. “It has been confirmed that the attacker was a hardcore militant. He was involved in different sabotage incidents,” Mr Khan claimed.
Saleem Khan, an eyewitness, said that he had just crossed the checkpost towards Sango when heard a loud bang followed by heavy firing.
“I returned but in the meantime Frontier Constabulary and police cordoned off the area and movement of the people was totally restricted,” he said and added that he came to the vegetable market via a stream but the link road was also blocked.
A policeman said that it was third attack on the checkpost. He said that the attacker was wearing black clothes and cap.
Peshawar capital city police officer appreciated the prompt action of policemen and announced cash award and commendation certificates for them.
