ISLAMABAD: As reported by the Daily Times on Friday, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Thursday received 24 more degrees of parliamentarians from various educational institutions, out of which 23 were declared original, while Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA Bashir Ahmed Leghari’s degree was declared fake by the commission.

Leghari’s intermediate certificate was found fake, according to HEC sources. He is an MPA from Sindh constituency (PS-56) of Badin cum Tando Muhammad Khan II (old Badin II).

According to well-placed sources in HEC, out of the total 1,195 degrees of all parliamentarians in the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies, the commission had received 1,084. Out of which, 55 had been declared fake, 576 degrees had been verified and declared original, 18 were in court processing, 11 had not yet been received from the Election Commission (ECP) while 405 degrees were found incomplete.

On Thursday, the commission received 24 more degrees out of which 23 were found to be original.

The sources told Daily Times, that HEC had completed the verification process swiftly and diligently but it was the ECP that had been delaying the process under parliamentarians’ influence. “It is in the mandate of the ECP… who could dismiss the membership of a parliamentarian but HEC could just verify their degrees and forward it to the ECP,” sources said, adding that ECP might be under pressure from lawmakers and that could be why they had been working sluggishly.
