Karachi: Decisions taken to check phony watan card-holders
KARACHI: According to the Dawn News on Saturday, a high-level meeting at the Chief Minister’s House on Friday took several important decisions to address complaints relating to the provision of financial relief to genuine flood-hit people through Watan Cards and checking fraudulent means by unscrupulous elements to claim eligibility or swindle card-holders.
Federal Interior Minister Rehman A. Malik, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Arshad Ali Hakeem discussed the complaints and a host of issues concerning Watan Cards.
They decided that flood victims registered with Nadra would be eligible to get financial aid through the Watan Cards and that only one card would be issued to an eligible family.
The meeting took stock of the situation and decided that those who had been given an amount of Rs20,000 as relief assistance through the card would be given Rs80,000 more upon producing the same card before the authority concerned.
The meeting observed that some criminal elements were cheating flood victims by playing tricks, and warned all registered flood-affected people to approach the HBL, UBL or other authorised banks’ branches in order to ensure discontinuation of payment to impersonators and swindlers using their cards.
The government has been receiving complaints that impersonators and swindlers are operating in flood-affected areas.
The meeting decided to take effective measures against such criminals.
On a directive issued by President Asif Ali Zardari, the heads of families originally living in the katcha areas and other parts of the flood-affected areas of Sindh have been advised to get themselves registered with Nadra by approaching the local Nadra offices so that they could be issued CNICs and Watan Cards.
The Nadra chairman told the meeting that necessary changes had been made in the list of Watan Card holders with the help of the provincial revenue department for the purpose of cancelling those cards obtained by undeserving people.
He said that 39 Nadra centres were functioning in the province to issue the cards to deserving families.
The chief minister issued directives to all officials concerned to address the complaints of flood victims on a priority basis so that they could be rehabilitated at the earliest.
