Karachi: SIU nails 4 bank robbers
KARACHI: According to The News on Saturday, the personnel of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Karachi, arrested four suspects wanted by the police in a number of bank robberies and other criminal cases, with a recovery of arms and looted bank amount of Rs1.3 million.
SSP Raja Umer Khattab said that during the period of investigation into bank robberies and other heinous crimes in different parts of city, a sleuth gave a tip-off about the gang being present in the Jamshed Quarters area.
He added that on information a raid was carried out by the SIU team who, after an encounter, arrested Hanif Bangash, Mohammed Suleman, Khawar, and Subhan with a recovery of arms and ammunitions.
The accused were moved to the police station for interrogation during which they disclosed their hideouts where another raid was carried out and the police recovered Rs13, 25, 000.
The accused persons, in initial probe, revealed information about four armed bank robberies they had committed in Soneri Bank, First Women’s Bank, Micro Finance Bank and Askeri Bank. It was further disclosed that the accused persons’ gang consisted of seven members which includes Police Constable of Jail PC Kamran Ali Khan and Mohammed Ishaq, both being still at large.
SSP Khattab said that the accused were earlier arrested by the police in 15 other crimes and were jailed.
Moreover, during 2010, here were 19 bank robberies in city of which they were arrested in 11 robberies, while one was reported to have been committed by the Lashker-i-Jhangvi (LJ).
He added that, the LJ terrorists were held by the police, but one of them fled with the looted amount and reports claimed that he was at present in Balochistan.
Moreover, in another bank robbery the activists of LJ and Tehrikh-i-Taliban Pakistan occurred in Orangi Town area, where an encounter took place between the personnel of SIU and local police, and the terrorists. During encounter the police killed one terrorist and arrested others with a recovery of arms and looted property.
