Lahore: 3 killed in mosque’s fund collection row
LAHORE: As reported by The News on Monday, three people of two rival groups were shot dead while two others sustained injuries in a crossfire over collecting fund for the construction of a local mosque and Madrissa in the Harbanspura Police area on Sunday.
Police have arrested five people of both groups and seized sophisticated arms from their custody.
However, no case was registered till the filing of this report. The bodies were removed to morgue while the injured were shifted to hospital.
The deceased were identified as Liaquat, 40, Rasheed, 50 and Tanveer, 40, residents of Faisal Park, Hurbanspura.
As per details, one Haji Sharif Arain, 65, a resident of Faisal Park Hurbanspura, was collecting fund for the construction of Bilal Mosque and Madrissa while his close relative former Naib Nazim Haji Shahid Mehmood was willing to collect the fund. Both sides instead of collecting fund collectively tussled with each other over the issue.
A police official said that a few days back, both groups had also scuffled with each other over the same issue but the locals settled the matter.
An eyewitness said that on the day of the incident, Haji Sharif was collecting fund for the said purpose and while collecting the fund from different houses, knocked the house of his relative former Naib Nazim Haji Shahid Mehmood.
He added that the latter came out from the house and after seeing Haji Sharif, exchanged harsh words with him and pushed him.
As a result, Haji Sharif fell on ground. The nephews of Haji Shahid named Faryad and Farhan also reached the spot and started scuffling with Haji Sharif.
Meanwhile, one Liaquat, 40, the son of Haji Sharif, who had returned from Kuwait recently, and the nephew of Haji Sharif named Rasheed, 50, also reached the spot after knowing about the incident. Both parties called their companions and started crossfire which created severe panic in the area.
As a result, Liaquat and Rasheed of Haji Sharif group and Tanveer, 40, of Haji Shahid group died on the spot.
