KARACHI: According to the Dawn News on Tuesday, three armed robbers stormed into a private bank branch in Federal B Area on Monday afternoon and took an armed security guard and the staff hostage at gunpoint before walking off with nearly Rs2 million within five minutes without facing any resistance, police said.

While the armed robbers also took away the closed-circuit television recording system, they returned the gun they had snatched from the lone security guard deputed at the branch before fleeing, the police said.

The officials added that contradictory accounts of eyewitnesses made an investigation complicated.

“It was around 12 noon when three men entered the Al Noor branch of the United Bank Limited in block 18 of Federal B Area,” said an official at the Gulberg police station.

The Monday heist came as the second such successful attempt by armed men in recent weeks as only last month bandits managed to grab a Rs2.5 million booty in two  on a single day in almost similar fashion.

“The armed men first snatched the gun from him without any resistance which seems normal considering the recent trend of bank robberies,” said an investigation official. “Normally, armed men take away security guards` guns with the booty while leaving the bank branch but in this case they returned it to the guard who again failed to take any action.”

The police later registered a case (FIR 545/2010) under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the branch manager.
