1195 Pak women murdered in 10 months
KARACHI: At least 1,195 women have been murdered across the country in some 4,870 cases of violence which have been reported, the project coordinator of Madadgaar Helpline said at a press briefing on Thursday.
More alarming data was shared by Zia Ahmed Awan, at the briefing which was held on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The data which was compiled from cases printed in the media from January 1 to November 15, 2010 states that 1,091 women have been tortured, while 491 committed suicide.
As many as 321 women were raped of which 98 women were killed after being raped.
Around 194 women were gang-raped, 451 women became victims of Karo-Kari, 316 braved police torture, 132 were forced to marry, 126 women were burnt, 92 were trafficked, while 27 faced Hudood cases and 23 became victims of Vani cases.
Also present on the occasion were survivors who braved violence, and family members of those women who had succumbed to brutality.
