Peshawar: Drones kill 19 on first day of 2011
PESHAWAR: At least 19 suspected militants were killed and two others got injuries in three back to back US drone attacks in Mirali, North Waziristan Agency and Muhammad Khail, South Waziristan Agency on Saturday.
Official sources said that in the first attack, a US unmanned aircraft fired four missiles on a vehicle and suspected militants standing at Madi Khel area of tehsil Spinwam’s sub division Mirali.
Resultantly, nine suspected militants were killed in the strike, while the vehicle was completely destroyed. Besides a house situated near to the targeted vehicle was also damaged. In the attack at least four missiles were fired.
Meanwhile the drone aircraft stated to be two in number with low surveillance created a panic among the residents of the area, due to which, people were reluctant for some time to go and see the dead bodies lying there on the site of the attack, the sources added.
However, after a while, these drones disappeared and people rushed to the site and were busy in seeing the dead bodies when suddenly another aircraft fired two more missiles.
As a result five more people were reportedly killed in the second strike while two others were injured. A total of six missiles were fired by these drones in the two back to back attacks.
In another drone attack in Muhammad Khail, SWA, 30km inside Pakistan area, five people were killed.
Sources said that it was the first US drone attack on the very first day of the New Year on North Waziristan Agency, which was carried out at about 7:30 am.
In the year of 2010, at least 117 drone attacks had been reported, in which, hundreds of people have been killed and many more injured.
The government of Pakistan has time and again called for stoppage of these attack, but to no avail.
