Karachi: 110 officials arrested for corruption in 2010
KARACHI: The anti-corruption department while registering 180 cases against government officials allegedly involved in different corruption cases, arrested 110 officials during 2010.
Minister for Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Abdul Haq Bhurt said this while addressing a press conference on Thursday.
He said that they would focus on education and health departments this year and conduct raids at basic health centres, schools and offices of Executive District Officers (EDOs).
The minister said that the corruption has slightly trimmed down during the last two years as a large number of cases have been registered against police, revenue, local government, education, health, works and services, cooperative society, irrigation, food, Zakat and Ushr departments etc.
He further said that the present government is going to bring drastic changes in present rules of the anti–corruption department. In this connection a summary has been forwarded to the Sindh chief minister. “We want to seek power to initiate open inquiry and arrest corrupt officials without waiting for approval of concerned officials,” he said.
He said along with departments, the cases against the builders of cooperative societies involved in fraud cases are under investigation.
Giving details of the cases, the minister said Hyderabad remained on top among other divisions of the province where 63 cases were registered, out of which, 45 officials were arrested.
Meanwhile 33 cases were lodged in Karachi, 44 Sukkur, 29 in Larkana and 11 in Mirpurkhas. Meanwhile, most of the cases were registered in revenue and police departments.
The data provided by the minister in his press conference revealed a meagre amount of conviction and citing reason of the same he said that most of the cases are under trial.
The district-wise data said that in Karachi, 31 cases were challaned, but the number of people convicted in different cases stood at four.
In Hyderabad, three people were convicted in 118 cases, in Sukkur four people were convicted in 58 cases, in Larkana three people in 92 cases and in Mirpurkhas division, 15 cases were challaned, but not a single official has been convicted so far.
