RAWALPINDI: Police have arrested six persons, including three officials of railway police, after seizing a truck loaded with arms and ammunitions, being carried from Peshawar, at a picket near Grassy Lane on Rawal Road here on Wednesday.
Police shifted all the arrested persons to Airport Police Station for further interrogation. Upon getting news, a sway of panic created among all the police high ups who rushed to Airport Police Station to review the situation.
Investigation Officer (IO) Sub Inspector (SI) Muhammad Bashir said that a police party was performing its routine duty at a police picket near Grassy Lane, Fauji Tower when they intercepted a car and Shahzore truck. He said police on conducting search seized 31 wooden boxes packed with arms and ammunitions.
Five people, travelling in the car ahead of the truck and truck driver were arrested, IO said. During preliminary investigation two persons among six arrested people namely Bilal and Javed admitted that they are arms dealers and running their business at Taramberi on Lehtarar Road and also showed their permits to the police, IO said.
The investigation officer Bashir said the two detainee arms dealers informed the police that they brought the arms and ammunition boxes from Peshawar via train and unloaded at Rawalpindi Railway Station and from the station they loaded these wooden boxes on a Shahzore truck to transport on Lehtarar Road.
“Police seized all the arms and ammunitions besides bounding the driver and three cops of Railway Police in Airport Police Station. The arms dealers were allowed to go their homes after showing arms permits.
Police will take further action in the light of Interior Ministry’s report on arms permits, said Airport Police Station House Officer (SHO) Haji Muhammad Khan. While providing the detail about seized arms and ammunitions, SHO said a total of 95 Repeater Riffles, 70 pistols of 30 bore, 28 pistols of 9mm and 80,000 rounds were packed in 31 wooden boxes.
