Facebook blasphemous contests: Court seeks record of identical pleas
LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Thursday summoned record of all identical petitions filed and disposed of by the court through which a permanent ban was sought on the access to social networking website “Facebook” in Pakistan for holding ‘blasphemous contests’.
Justice Saeed was hearing a fresh petition questioning a new objectionable contest announced on the Facebook, and adjourned hearing till May 10. Mohammad & Ahmad, a public interest litigation company, through its chairman Mohammad Azhar Siddique filed the petition saying the website was holding a “2nd Annual Draw Muhammad Day-May 20, 2011” contest.
He prayed that police be directed to register a criminal case under section 295-C and other relevant provisions of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against the perpetrators.
He sought directions for federal government to check display of blasphemous material on facebook and other such websites in Pakistan. The petitioner further prayed that the access to facebook and other such websites be permanently blocked in Pakistan.
