LHC rejects bail of suspect in Sri Lankan cricket team attack
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC), on Wednesday, rejected Malik Ishaq’s bail application. Ishaq is suspected of involvement in an attack on Sri Lankan cricket team. The bench dismissed the application on the grounds that the main role of assisting the attackers had been attributed to the applicant in the FIR, therefore, he is not entitled to the concession of a bail.
The Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked on March 3, 2009, when a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers, part of a larger convoy, was fired upon with AK-47 rifles, rocket and hand grenades by 12 gunmen, near Liberty Square, Lahore. The cricketers were on their way to play the third day of the second test match against the Pakistan cricket team. Six members of the Sri Lanka national cricket team were injured while six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were killed. Police had arrested over 250 suspects, including Malik Ishaq.
