Karachi: 2 activists shot dead in land dispute
KARACHI: Tension gripped the neighbourhood after two persons were gunned down and about six others were wounded in Bhitai Abad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, in a land dispute between two political groups on Sunday, police said. They said the incident was sparked when activists of the Awami National Party attacked workers of a Sindhi nationalist party who were overseeing the construction of a wall on a plot in the remit of the Sachal police station.
As a result of the firing, Mumtaz Magsi suffered a fatal bullet wound, and Shahnawaz, Mehboob, Abdul Rasheed, Liaquat and Akbar were also wounded.
The victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, where Mumtaz Magsi was pronounced dead. The others were admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Following the incident shops and other commercial activities were shut down as tension prevailed in the area.
Police said that in the evening, another clash between the two groups took place at the same spot in which another activist of the Sindhi nationalist group was gunned down.
Police said the victim was identified as Rahat Commando. They shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities.
Following the incident there were reports of intermittent firing in the area. Police and Rangers personal were sent to the area to control the situation.
