Karachi: Arshad Pappu granted bail in murder case
Karachi: Arshad Pappu, of the Lyari gang war fame, was granted bail on Monday after being indicted on charges related to the murder of a Lyari-based transporter in 2004. A sessions court of Karachi East granted him bail against a surety of Rs 0.4 million under the consistency rule, as the co–accused in the murder case of the transporter, Abdul Waheed, was granted bail by the Sindh High Court (SHC).
When the case came up for hearing in the court of the additional district and sessions judge, East, Judicial complex, Central Jail Karachi, Javed Mir, counsel for Arshad Pappu, submitted a copy of bail granted to Waheed.
Arshad Pappu had earlier been denied bail in November last year on the grounds that evidence against him corroborated commission of the offence.
However, his counsel contended that co-accused in the same case was already granted bail so there was no reason that the court should not grant him bail. The prosecutor argued that the high-profile character of the Lyari gang war had no right to bail. While there was presumption of innocence, the proof was substantial and growing every day, he said.
The case is being conducted inside jail due to security reasons. According to the prosecution, on January 11, 2003, Arshad Pappu and Abdul Waheed kidnapped Mama Faizu and later killed him. They dumped his body in the bushes near Machar Colony. An FIR was registered against them at the Chakiwara police station.
