3 injured in clash at FUUAST
Karachi: Activists of two students groups had an exchange of fire after periodic skirmishes on the Gulshan Campus of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) on Tuesday. Three students and a police ASI sustained injuries during the firefight.
The clashes began when students belonging to the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO) and Pukhtoon Students Federation (Pukhtoon SF) were protesting on the campus against the killings of ANP and MQM activists.
After hurling slogans at each other, both sides engaged in a firefight. The police intervened but they were pushed back after one of its junior officers was injured in the crossfire. The injured were taken to the Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) and, according to the latest reports from the hospital sources, the condition of one student was serious.
Registrar FUUAST Dr Qamrul Haque told The News that the firing between the two groups was so intense that they (university staff) were confined to their rooms. “I have been in the Federal College (now university) since 1979 but I have never seen such a gunfight. It seemed that the hell was let loose by the students.
The terminal examinations had to be postponed. There will be no classes on June 15 and 16,” he informed.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Qaiser has called a meeting of the registrar, deans, chairpersons and the student advisers on June 16 to discuss the law and order situation on the campus. “We will keep our fingers crossed till that time,” Dr Haque said.
