Gujranwala: ANF majors and others sent to jail
GUJRANWALA, June 14: A court on Tuesday sent Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) director and deputy director, both majors, along with their four subordinates, to the central jail on a judicial remand while army authorities sought custody of the two accused army men for their court martial.
All the six ANF officials, along with 19 others, were accused of torturing an alleged drug peddler Zulfikar of Naushera Sansi Road to death in a case registered on June 12, 2009, on the orders of the Lahore High Court on a petition filed by Sughran Bibi, the mother of the victim.
The accused were granted an interim bail the same day, but they did not appear in the court for two years. When they appeared in the court of District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Rasheed Qamar for confirmation of the bail, the judge got them arrested in the courtroom.
However, the complainant woman again moved the court on Monday complaining that Khiali police to whom the accused were handed over by the court had allegedly released them instead of producing them before a magistrate.
Headquarters SP Ali Javed Malik had claimed the police had kept the arrest of the accused pending as there was no “sound evidence” against them. He had said if “sufficient” evidence was recorded against the accused, they would be arrested “within no time”.
Sources said after the print media flashed the story of alleged release of the accused, Khiali police on Monday again arrested them to save their skin and produced them in the court of Judicial Magistrate Yaser Hayat on Tuesday.
Earlier, the police told the court that no article was required to be recovered from the accused and they (police) had no objection if they (accused) were sent to jail. The court sent all the six accused to the central jail on a judicial remand.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the army authorities concerned filed an application under 549 CrPC to the session court, seeking custody of the accused army personnel for their court martial.
The D&SJ who has already summoned the Gujranwala city police officer and an investigating officer on Wednesday (today) also issued a notice to the complainant and her counsel asking them to appear in the court today.
