ASWJ man among four gunned down
Karachi: Four more people, including an activist of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) and a supporter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, fell prey to target killings in the city on Tuesday. A chartered accountant was gunned down in an act of target killing in Taimuria, triggering violence in the area.
An ASWJ activist, Abdul Qadir, 35, was killed while he was going to work from home on Tuesday morning. According to the Taimuria police, witnesses had already rushed Qadir to hospital before they arrived at the crime scene. They then cordoned off the vicinity and sent personnel to the hospital to fulfil legal formalities.
Police referred to witnesses’ accounts and told The News that the man was passing through Shafiq Morr when two men riding a motorcycle intercepted him and shot him dead before fleeing the scene.
The police said that Qadir succumbed to his injuries during treatment. He suffered four bullet wounds on different parts of his body. Investigators confirmed that the victim was a resident of Godraan Colony in North Karachi and that the victim had left behind a widow and four children. According to the police, he was working as a chartered accountant for a private firm in Clifton and was also an activist of the ASWJ.
Tension gripped Qadri’s residential area in Godraan Colony as well as other parts of New Karachi Town with armed men resorting to aerial firing and forcing shopkeepers to close their businesses.
Angry protesters also took to the streets and hurled accusations at rival groups for targeting Qadir. Police contingents were deployed to the affected areas and eventually controlled the law and order situation.
On Tuesday night, two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on a man, Lal Zamin, 55, in Naseer Colony in the Baldia Town police limits. Zamin, a resident of Keamari, died of the spot.
A cobbler became a victim of target killing in Block 17 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar in the Sharea Faisal police limits. Police said Jabir Khan, 35, was targeted near Haroon Royal City.
Also on Tuesday night, the manager of a wedding hall was shot dead in Korangi. M Ilyas, son of M Idrees, was fired upon by two men riding a motorcycle when he was at the Noor Sabah Shadi Hall, near Korangi Crossing. Police said he was a resident of Allah Wala Town and an MQM supporter.
