5 killed in Sarband as attack on check-post repulsed
PESHAWAR: Police repulsed another attack on a security post located on the boundary between Peshawar and Khyber Agency in Sarband area early Wednesday in which five militants were killed, said an official.
“Five militants were killed and several others injured when the police commandoes in Manzoor Shaheed police post returned the militants’ fire at around 1:30 a.m.,” stated Superintendent of Police (SP) City Imtiaz Shah. The official has been the acting in-charge of the Cantonment Circle since SP of Cantonment Shafiullah was injured in a blast in Khyber Super Market last week.
The SP City said a heavy exchange of fire took place when over 65 militants stormed the checkpost in a bid to enter the provincial capital. “The policemen in the post remained unharmed and managed to gun down five of the attackers and injure several others before the militants were pushed back to the tribal area,” he said.
Militants attacked the Manzoor Shaheed police post on a number of occasions in the past few weeks. Several police officials have so far lost their lives in these attacks. At least six rockets were fired at the nearby Riaz Shaheed Post in the jurisdiction of the Sarband Police Station four days back. No loss of life was, however, reported in the attack.
Manzoor and Riaz were the officers of the local police killed during terrorist attacks in the past few months. The two posts have been recently established to counter attacks from the Khyber Agency.
The security posts on the boundary between Peshawar and Khyber Agency in jurisdiction of Hayatabad, Badaber, Matani and other police stations have also come under attack during the last many weeks, resulting in killing of several policemen as well as militants.
