Kohat Tunnel land scam: two officials get 5-year jail
PESHAWAR: An accountability court on Thursday sentenced former land acquisition collector (LAC) Said Rehman and assistant director Fakhar Zaman to five-year imprisonment with a fine of Rs3.5 million each and acquitted other nine persons in a land scam.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had filed a reference against 11 officials, including Said Rehman, Fakhar Zaman, former project director Parvez Gul, former LAC Muhammad Farooq, landowners Haji Nazir, Muhammad Asim, Muhammad Fazil, Nadir Khan, Gul Rehman, Muzaffar and Shakir Afridi.
During the course of proceedings, the NAB prosecutor contended that all the accused persons were involved in embezzlement of millions of rupees when acquiring land for the construction of Kohat Tunnel. The NAB had filed a reference of over Rs6.8 million against the accused. It said the officials had acquired the land during construction of Kohat Tunnel on cheaper rates but showed higher rates in the official documents, causing a loss of Rs6.839 million to the national exchequer.
The NAB proved charges against Said Rehman and Fakhar Zaman. Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi sentenced them to five-year imprisonment with Rs3.5 million fine each. The other accused in the case were acquitted.
