Karachi: PS to ex-FM sent to jail in fraud case
KARACHI: The personal secretary to former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday till July 6 for his alleged involvement in a fraud case.
Wali Mohammad Rahimoon was sent to jail for allegedly cheating a man named Salahuddin of Rs25 million. He was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate South Nadeem Badr Qazi. He was an active member of the Pakistan People’s Party and contested elections from a seat in Tharparkar but never won.
He allegedly has a history in fraudulent activity, as reports state that he used to serve as an engineer at the Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC) before being sacked on account of cheating the company of million of rupees.
According to the prosecution, he borrowed Rs25 million from Salahuddin on April 30, 2008, with the commitment to return the amount through a monthly installment of Rs50,000 over a period ending January 2011 along with the accumulated interest.
It was reported that Rahimoon failed to return the money using the excuse that he was met with financial constraints. Salahuddin then proceeded to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Boat Basin police station, after which the suspect was arrested near Clifton on Wednesday evening.
He was charged under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly Inducing delivery of property), 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
The judge issued directives to the investigation officer to submit a charge sheet on the next date of hearing scheduled for July 6.
