Karachi: Three Jundullah, TTP militants arrested
KARACHI: The police claim to have arrested two suspected activists of the banned Jundullah outfit and another belonging to the militant Tehreek-e-Taliban organisation.
The Anti-Extrermism Cell (AEC) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said they also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the suspects. The detained men were suspected to be involved in the deadly 2009 Ashura blast and attacks on government installations.
It may be noted here that earlier, officials of the Sindh police had sparked off a controversy by stating that Jundullah suspects who were already in the custody of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) were not involved in the Ashura blasts. However, the CID claimed that the suspects arrested in the latest raid confessed to their involvement in the deadly attack as well as other terror plots in the city.
SSP Mohammad Aslam Khan of the AEC said that the cell had received a tip-off that militants belonging to Jundullah were hiding in Mauripur. A raid was conducted in the area and after a brief encounter Rizwan Ali and Mohammed Saleem alias Jehadi alias Taliban were arrested. The suspects were then moved to the investigation unit.
During a search of their hideout, the police recovered two suicide jackets, 25 kilogrammes of explosive, a light machinegun (LMG), 30 feet of detonating wire, 10 detonators, TNT blocks, three .222 rifles, four uniforms of the Capital City Police, four repeaters, 300 rounds for a sub-machinegun (SMG), 100 LMG rounds, three 9mm and two TT pistols.
SSP khan claimed the suspects had been planning a major terrorist attack on important installations and the suspect Saleem alias Jihadi was a member of the Askari Wing of Junduullah, which is notorious for making TNT bombs and attacking key installations.
Some of the attacks this organisation had been accused of include the attack on the Ashura procession, a bomb attack on 8th Moharram in Papoosh Nagar and a blast at a procession in Qasba Colony.
In another raid by the AEC, a suspected commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Fazlullah group was arrested after a brief encounter in the Walika area of SITE. SSP Khan said that suspect TTP militant and commander, Nazeer Ahmed alias Waqas was arrested. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from his possession.
He said that the held terrorist also active in battling security forces as they conducted an operation to flush out militants in Swat. In addition to this, Nazeer was suspected of targeting government buildings. He was allegedly awaiting further instructions from his commanders while hiding out in Karachi.
