Lahore: Robbers gang eludes police
LAHORE: A 16-member gang of dacoits-cum-extortionists has become a challenge to City Renala Khurd police in Okara district as none of them could be arrested so far.
The notorious gang has become a symbol of terror for the citizens, not only in Okara district but also in the provincial metropolis. Punjab police have badly failed to arrest the members of such kind of notorious gangs despite they have been declared proclaimed offenders for the last many years.
In Charge Renala Khurd police station city investigation, Inspector Abdul Sattar, could not provide any logic for not arresting the members of notorious gang including its ringleader, Shaukat Ali alias Shoki Odh and his three brothers, sons of Jan Muhammad, a resident of 22/1 R-B, Renala Khurd.
The ringleader of Shoki Odh Dacoit-cum-extortionist gang, his three brothers and their father were also involved in heinous crimes, including murder, dacoity and extortion in different areas of Lahore and Okara districts.
Fifteen members of the gang were identified as Muhammad Younis Odh, Javed alias Jedi and Muhabat alias Muhabti, brothers of ringleader Shoki Odh and their accomplices Muhammad Iqbal Waryam, Muhammad Akbar and Muhammad Akram, sons of Noor Muhammad Sayal, Amin, son of Jahangir Babral, Rehman, son of Khan Sayal, Aslam, son of Jamal Babral, Shahid, son of Hassan Baloch, Muhammad Khan, son of Rajab Ali, Muhammad Abdullah, son of Hussain, Shaukat Ali, son of Muhammad Din, Imran, son of Jahangir, Altaf Hussain, son of Muhammad Hussain Baloch and Allah Bukhsh Babral.
According to the police record available with The News, ringleader Shoki Odh is involved in around 21 cases of heinous crimes registered at Renala Khurd City, Okara Saddar and Sattukatla, Lahore, police stations. First FIR traced against Shoki Odh was registered in 2002 at City Renala Khurd under section 302 and 393 of PPC while the last case, number 130, was registered against him in the same police station on May 15, 2011, under sections 430, 452, 506-B, 148 and 149 of PPC. Other cases were registered against him under various sections of PPC, including 392, 386, 395, 397, 430, 452 and 324.
Around 11 cases have been traced against Younis alias Younisi, brother of Shoki Odh, registered in City Renala Khurd police station under various sections of law, including 392, 380 and 395 and 506 of PPC.
The police record shows that Muhabat alias Muhabti, another notorious member of Shoki Odh gang and also the brother of Shoki Odh, was involved in 15 cases of heinous crimes registered at different police stations in Lahore and Renala Khurd. About two FIRs have been traced against Javed alias Jedi, the third brother of Shoki dacoit, in City Renala Khurd police station.
Interestingly, six FIRs have also been traced against Jan Muhammad alias Janoo, father of ringleader Shoki Odh. Janoo had been involved in heinous crimes, including burglary since, 1986 in the City Renala Khurd police limits.
Recently, Shoki Odh and his over 15 accomplices had also taught a lesson to one Chaudhry Rafiq, son of Muhammad Munshi Khan, a resident of Satghara, City Renala Khurd, and his two nephews for not giving them extortion money. Victim Chaudhry Rafiq told The News that on May 12, 2011, at around 5 pm, he along with his two friends Naeem and Yasir visited his agricultural land at 22/1-RB for watering crops on their turn.
In the meantime, Shoki and his accomplices reached there and started ruining his crop by using a tractor. However, two passersby intervened and saved their precious crops. Ch Rafiq has said that the motive behind this incident was his (Rafiq s) refusal to pay extortion money to Shoki Odh and his accomplices as they were allegedly involved in extorting money from farmers. Subsequently, City Renala police registered a case, 126/11, against Shoki and his 15 accomplices under sections 440, 506-B, 386, 148 and 149 of PPC but failed to arrest any of the accused persons. Unmoved by the registration of FIR, the gang intercepted Chaudhry Muhammad Rafiq when he was on his way home in a car (LEA-4742) along with his two nephews Naeem and Yasir at around 7:30 pm on May 12, 2011. Rafiq added that the accused persons headed by Shoki Odh were equipped with sophisticated weapons and they started beating them, robbed them of Rs 35,500 in cash and escaped on the intervention of locals. Police after being informed reached the scene and registered a case, number 127/11, against Shoki Odh and his 14 accomplices under sections 395 and 397 of PPC at City Renala Khurd police station but again failed to arrest the gang members. Having no fear of arrest, Shoki Odh and his accomplices once again stopped Chaudhry Rafiq and his relatives from watering his crops and ordered them to leave the area on May 14, 2011. City Renala police showed efficiency by immediately registering a case, number 130/11, against Shoki and his accomplices under sections 430, 452, 506-B, 148 and 149 of PPC but still failed to arrest the accused persons. Chaudhry Rafiq said that he had been requesting the SHO, in charge investigation, DSP of City Renala Khurd Circle and newly appointed the DPO of Okara for the last one and half months for action but to no avail. He claimed that police had not arrested even a single nominated accused despite his constant requests to the officers. He also cleared that he had no clash with Muzare-een on state land as the president of Muzare-een had also accompanied him to the office of the DPO and said they had no issue with Ch Rafiq.
Chaudhray Rafiq has appealed to the Punjab chief minister and inspector general of police for justice and protection to his life from the notorious gang. It is also learnt that the members of Shoki Odh gang had also made firing at the main gate of City Renala police station for half an hour some eight days back.
Inspector Abdul Sattar on the issue said that they were trying to arrest the accused persons and they would arrest them very soon. To many queries, Abdul Sattar gave single answer that they would arrest the accused persons. DSP Asghar Ali Dogar was not aware of the issue when contacted by this correspondent and he claimed that he would check the recent incident and take strict action against the accused persons.
