Karachi: PS to ex-FM denied bail in fraud case
Karachi: The personal secretary to a former foreign minister faced humiliation on Wednesday at the hands of the deputy district public prosecutor who strongly opposed the bail plea in a fraud case. Wali Mohammad Rahimoon, personal secretary to former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, was charged with cheating another bureaucrat, former deputy commissioner Salahuddin Osto, of Rs2.5 million.
He was in judicial custody and obtained remand from the judicial magistrate (JM), South, Nadeem Badr Qazi, but the case was transferred to Judicial Magistrate South Hatim Aziz Solangi on the plea that the complainant, Osto, expressed no confidence in the court. He filed an application in the court of the district judge (DJ), South, to transfer his case citing lack of trust.
The case was transferred to JM South Hatim Azz Solangi and on Wednesday his bail plea was on roster. The deputy district public prosecutor, Syed Shamim, strongly contended that it was a shameful act that a person no less than a PS to the former foreign minister cheated another former bureaucrat of an amount of Rs2.5 million.
He further argued that if people of repute started cheating it would open corruption among the poor class and as such Rahimoon did not deserve bail. Furthermore, he said that Osto had given money on loan for business whose profit along with the amount was to be paid by Rahimoon but he failed to pay after having given two or three installments. It was a breach of trust, he said.
The court, hearing the arguments, dismissed the bail application and sent him back to jail. According to the prosecution, Rahimoon, an estranged leader of the PPP, borrowed Rs2.5 million from Salahuddin on April 30, 2008, and told him that he would repay the amount by January 2011 through a monthly installment of Rs50,000 along with the profit.
