Karachi: A policeman and three land grabbers were killed in an encounter in Mehran Town on Monday night. According to SP Usman of Korangi Town, Korangi Industrial Area policemen were on a patrol when they saw some people occupying land illegally. On seeing the police team approaching, the land grabbers opened fire, which was returned by the police.
During the heavy gun battle, head constable Naved and three unidentified land grabbers were killed. Another eight suspects were arrested after the shootout. Police also claimed to have seized weapons and other items from those arrested.
Sources said that a political group was assisting the land grabbers in occupying land in Mehran Town. There have been increasing complaints about the presence of a land mafia in Mehran Town. On June 29, two women from the area accused the land grabbers of raping them to force them to vacate their house.
Parveen Siddiq, 30, wife of Muhammad Siddiq, and her sister-in-law, 25-year-old Fatima, had told the media at the Karachi Press Club that they were raped and forced to vacate their house by the armed people who had the backing of the local police.
Parveen and Fatima claimed that they had purchased a plot in Mehran Town, Korangi, and built a Kutcha home where they were living with their families. They alleged that the area SHO, Shahid Tanoli, arrested them after implicating them in a false case and locked them up.
Parveen claimed that when they reached home after release they found that some armed criminals had occupied it and threatened them to surrender the house to them. According to her, when they insisted to stay in their house, the armed men raped both of them.
