8 militants, two Lashkar men killed in Dir clashes
UPPER DIR: At least eight insurgents and two peace lashkar members were killed as clashes continued in Barawal tehsil of Upper Dir on Thursday after around 800 to 1,000 militants crossed over from Afghanistan and launched attacks on the civilian population and security forces checkposts. “Curfew was clamped in tehsil Barawal on Wednesday which is still enforced due to prevailing tension in the area,” official sources said.
Sources said hundreds of armed militants entered Upper Dir and attacked the civilian population and security forces checkposts in Barawal area, killing two locals who were members of a peace lashkar and inflicting injuries on five others. The attack was retaliated immediately in which eight insurgents were killed.
Sources said that the insurgents set on fire four schools, 15 shops and a mosque. Many locals fled the area due to intense clashes between security forces and attacking militants.
Police said that a joint search operation against the insurgents ñ in which police personnel, peace lashkar members and security forces were taking part ñ was conducted in Nusrat Darra, Bature village and Khurow Darra areas.
