PESHAWAR: Two policemen were killed and seven other cops, including an officer, were wounded when militants attacked a patrolling van in Mera Kachoray with an improvised explosive device (IED) late Sunday.

A police official said a patrolling party of the Urmar police station was on routine duty when it met an IED planted near the residence of a former union council nazim in Mera Kachoray at around 11:25 pm. Another official said that attackers triggered the roadside explosives with a remote-controlled device when the patrolling car came close to the spot.

“As a result, Constable Javed and Constable Farzand were killed while seven cops, including Sub Inspector Malang Jan, were wounded,” said a police official. The official said that the cops were changing their patrolling shift at the spot when they were caught by the blast, which is why the number of policemen in a single van was so high. The wounded and bodies were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital.

Police have launched a search operation in the area to arrest the terrorists. The area where the attack was carried out is close to the Frontier Region Peshawar and Darra Adamkhel of the Frontier Region Kohat. Militants have been attacking police in the outskirts for the last many months.
