2 soldiers killed in SWA IED attack
WANA: Two Pakistan Army soldiers were killed and three others sustained injuries when militants attacked a vehicle with an improvised explosive device (IED) at Bazay mountainous area in Makeen in South Waziristan on Thursday.
Security officials said the militants had planted the (IED) on the road near Makeen town and triggered the explosion to blow up a double-cabin pickup truck carrying soldiers. Two soldiers died on the spot and three others suffered multiple injuries in the attack, they said.
The soldiers were later rescued and admitted to a hospital at the nearby Razmak military base in North Waziristan tribal region. Three of them were stated to have suffered serious injuries but were reported to be in a stable condition.
Tribal sources said the situation in South Waziristan was still uncertain, though the government conducted major military operation there against the militants affiliated with Hakimullah Mahsud.
A mountainous strip along the Frontier Region Bannu to Mir Ali and up to Shaktoi near Jannata is Srarogha tehsil is said to be controlled by the militants who often fire rockets and mortars at the military installations.
There were reports that military authorities had taken notice of the frequent attacks by the militants in the stretch from Shaktoi to Jannata in South Waziristan and decided to launch operation in these areas against the militants.
The military authorities are concerned about the deteriorating security situation on the Razmak-Makeen road and in the nearby mountainous villages that the security forces had secured during the military operation earlier. However, the militants appear to have sneaked back into this area and started attacks on the forces.
