Contempt notices in Kot Lakhpat market case
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday issued notices to the Lahore commissioner, the district coordination officer, the Gulberg TMO and the Model Town superintendent of police on a contempt of court petition filed by traders of Kot Lakhpat fruit and vegetable market.
The petitioners, including Abdul Ghafoor, pleaded that the High Court in March this year had stayed the shifting of the Kot Lakhpat market but the commissioner and the DCO had ordered shifting of the market to Hadiara.
They said that, following the orders of the district authorities, the Gulberg TMO along with the police had carried out an operation on July 11, expelling the traders from the market and bulldozing their markets.
They said the police had also tortured the traders on resistance against ‘illegal’ act of evacuating the market besides arresting hundreds of traders. The petitioners said the act of the district government was in sheer violation of the High Court orders as the case against shifting of the market was still pending adjudication with the court and the stay was also intact.
They prayed that the contempt of court proceedings be initiated against the district authorities as well as police. After hearing the contention, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued notices to the respondents for September 8.
