Mardan: Labourers protest mobile phones’ snatching
MARDAN: Labourers working on the Baizai canal project in the Katlang area staged protest near the police post in Ghundo village on Sunday after several of them were robbed of their mobile phones in the area.
More than 100 labourers took part in the protest as they blocked the road. On the intervention of local elders led by Mumtaz Khan the protesters, however, agreed to disperse. The elders assured them that their complaint would be forwarded to the authorities so that the robbers could be nabbed and security improved in the area.
Mumtaz Khan told The News that he had contacted elders from the Katlang, Shamozai, Babozai, Mian Khan-Singahu, Kohi Barmol, Peepal, etc and a jirga would be held today (Monday) in Ghundo to discuss the insecurity in the area.
He said the police had raided a house and arrested a man on suspicion that he could be among the robbers who snatched mobile phones from several labourers in the Mian Khan and other nearby areas after sunset. The labourers are working on the Baizai canal scheme, which would bring water from Malakand Agency under the Malakand-3 project.
