Karachi: ASWJ, PAC activists among seven shot dead
Karachi: Despite the deployment of additional law enforcers in the wake of recent ethnic violence in the city, target killings claimed the lives of another seven people, including activists of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) and the People’s Aman Committee, on Monday.
Junaid was fired upon and seriously injured by two armed men riding a motorcycle near MPR Colony in Orangi Town on Monday evening. He received multiple bullet wounds and was rushed to hospital where he expired during treatment.
Junaid was a supporter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. After the incident, tension gripped the area as armed men resorted to aerial firing. In the meantime, a mini-bus of route N-5 came under attack near Banaras Chowk in Peerabad. As a result, two people, including the driver, sustained injuries. The driver, Syed Nawaid, later died at hospital. The other injured was identified as Rafiq.
In separate incident, an activist of the Awami National Party, Javed Khan, was shot near a government college in the Peerabad area. He received a single bullet on his hand and doctors said he was out of danger.
Law enforcers, including Rangers, moved into the area and brought the situation under control after hours of resistance. Meanwhile, Waheed was shot dead near the Malir River in Korangi Industrial Area. Wahid was a resident of the Nazimabad area and the incident happened when he and his wife were returning from their relatives’ house in Korangi No-4 on a motorcycle.
He received a single bullet on his head that caused his instant death. Wahid was a worker of the defunct CDGK. Police were investigating the matter. In a late-night incident, two activists of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) were gunned down in the Gulbahar area.
Hafeez and Sajid were travelling in a car when armed motorcyclists intercepted them near Peetal Wali Gali and sprayed them with bullets. Both died on the spot.
Later, protesters gathered at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to protest the killing. Tension gripped the Gulbahar area after the incident. Late on Monday night, motorcyclists shot two men sitting at a place in Bheempura. The injured, Imdad and Mazhar, were taken to the Civil Hospital, where Imdad died from his wounds.
Police said Imdad was a PAC activist. Tension gripped the areas surrounding the hospital as unknown men resorted to aerial firing after the attack. Badar, aged 15, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Gosht Market of the Malir 15 area. In Lea Market, two PML-N workers were injured when motorcyclists sprayed them with bullets.
