Lahore: Police execute killer of girl, then implicate her father in murder
LAHORE: Shadbagh police killed two birds with one stone. First they killed the murderer of a nine-year old girl and then implicated her father and his friend in the murder. All they did this to protect another accused.
Isha was playing outside her house on June 1 when she disappeared. Her family conducted a thorough search of the locality but to no avail. Police registered a case on the complaint of victim’s father, Ashiq Shah of Din Park, Shadbagh.
The next day, a schoolmaster, Hafeez, spotted the victim’s body in an empty plot and informed her family.
The family initially accused Tariq Butt, who happened to be a relative of Ghazali Butt, an advisor to Punjab chief minister, of the crime. Police kept Tariq Butt in custody for 10 days and released him after a so-called interrogation. The girl’s family staged a protest demonstration against the release of Tariq Butt who had been nominated the main culprit in the case and police was forced to round him up again and send him to the Camp Jail.
Meanwhile, the girl’s family members also pointed a finger at one Hassan, a resident of the same locality, following his contradictory statements over the gruesome killing. The plot where the girl’s body was found was situated in front of Hassan’s house. However, Hassan was not arrested for questioning.
Baba Chohan, a social worker of the area and a friend of the girl’s father Ashiq pursued the case secretly and managed to get a confessional statement from Hassan a week back. On July 13, Baba Chohan called a meeting in which Hassan appeared and confessed to killing the girl with the abetment of Tariq Butt. Hassan’s uncle Anwar, a former councillor, went berserk when he heard about the confessional statement of his nephew and assured the participants of the meeting that he would not support him in this regard. Ironically, the participants of the meeting let Hassan go instead of handing him over to police.
Hassan’s mother Parveen Bibi said that a child came to her house on July 13 late at night and asked her to give him Hassan’s clothes and mobile phone. The child left the place after receiving the articles.
Later, Parveen was attracted by gunshots and she rushed to the scene only to discover her son dead in a pool of blood and his body was encircled by policemen. She alleged that Baba Chohan had handed her son over to police who eliminated him two hours after his confessional statement.
She further claimed that she did not want to register a case against anyone but police who had forced her to nominate the girl’s father Ashiq and Baba Chohan in the FIR. She alleged that Hassan was killed only to help Tariq Butt, the other kidnapper of Isha passing days in Camp Jail, as Hassan had given a statement against him. Interestingly, Baba Chohan was also found missing after the murder of Hassan.
Locals said that Shadbagh Police personnel carrier was present at the spot when the killing was carried out. Locals also believed that the police had killed Hassan and registered a fake murder case against the girl’s father and his friend only to save Tariq Butt. On Saturday (July 16), Isha’s father Ashiq presented himself before the DSP Misri Shah Circle as Shadbagh Police were teasing his family. It is also learnt that policemen had also threatened the family of Ashiq of dire consequences if they tried to protest against police. Residents of the area told The News that some unidentified persons had also resorted to firing into the air on Friday night for creating panic among locals.
Talking to The News, SP Investigations City Division Ahmad Nawaz Cheema on the issue said the boy, Hassan, had been killed by two nominated accused, including Ashiq, the victim girl’s father. To a question, he denied involvement of police in the killing of Hassan. However, he said that if involvement of any police official was determined during the course of interrogation, strict action would be taken as per the law.
