Karachi: One killed, 3 hurt in clash between religious groups
KARACHI: A man was killed while three others injured in a clash which broke out between two religious groups during the funeral prayers of defunct Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP)’s activists Abdul Hafeez and Sajid alias Mullah here on Tuesday. The funeral prayers were being held at Petal Wali Gali in the area of Old Golimar when a rift erupted between the activists of SSP and another religious group present in the area, leaving one killed and two injured.
Maulana Taj Hanfi, spokesman of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) confirmed that Aqeel, son of Ahmed Chauhan, an active worker of his party was killed during the clash. SHO Rizvia Masroor Ejaz said that the clash started between two rival groups when bodies of two activists of ASWJ were moved to Khajji Ground for final rites. As they reached near Kazmia imambargah, unidentified armed men opened fire shattering the glasses of imambargah’s windows. As a result, a crossfire started and both parties shot at each other as people ran for cover. The dead body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Three people including Rehan, Abbas and Jaffar got injured and were shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. As the news of Aqeel’s killing reached his residential area, tension gripped the entire neighbourhood and traders pulled down their shutters amid crackle of gunfire. Transport disappeared from the roads as charged resident took to the streets and chanted slogans against the police. Immediately after the incident, Liaquatabad police were called on the spot. They controlled the situation and detained 20 people. Activists of banned SSP also staged a protest against the detention of their 20 activists after the clash. Later, the bodies of SSP activists, murdered in target killing Monday night, were buried in Khajji Ground.
