Lahore: Murder accused killed, co-accused injured in ‘police custody’
LAHORE: A murder accused was shot dead and his brother, a co-accused, was injured while in the custody of Sheikhupura Factory Area police, when two unidentified bike-riders opened indiscriminate fire on them in Shahdara police precincts on Tuesday.
Sheikhupura DPO suspended a sub-inspector and a constable and directed Additional SP to hold an inquiry into the incident. The victim was identified as Muhammad Waqas, 26, and his injured brother was identified as Fahad alias Nannah, 25, residents of Faizpur. Shahdara police reached the spot and removed the body to city morgue for autopsy. Police had not registered any case till filing of the report.
Sub-Inspector Rab Nawaz of Factory Area Police, along with a constable, presented both the accused before DSP Naveed Irshad at Shahdara courts as their physical remand had ended. The policemen had brought the accused in a private car.
After the meeting, Rab Nawaz, a constable and both accused were going back to Factory Area police station in the private car. As they reached near Jia Musa chowk, two men, riding a bike, intercepted the car at around 2 pm and opened indiscriminate fire on them.
As a result, Waqas and Fahad received serious bullet injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. Waqas succumbed to his wounds on the way to hospital while Fahad was stated to be out of danger in the hospital. Shahdara SHO Inspector Sharif Sindhu, along with police contingent, reached the spot and inspected the crime scene.
DPO Sheikhupura told this correspondent that injured person was an accused in the murder case of Hafiz Sani’s father, while Waqas was nominated in another murder case. He said their physical remand was over and they had to be produced before the court on Wednesday (today). The investigation officer had presented both accused persons before the DSP for checking final interrogations.
DPO Afzal Mahmood Butt admitted that the incident had occurred due to negligence of the SI and constable as they had taken them in a private car. The DPO said it was being suspected that the relatives of murdered persons had plotted to kill both brothers. However, he said it was too early to ascertain the motive behind killings.
