Karachi: ‘Stolen’ baby home after a day out
Karachi: The drama of baby “stealing” at the Sobhraj Maternity Hospital ended here on Monday morning after the couple that had taken a baby boy and left their baby girl behind at the hospital returned the infant to its parents.
The police have arrested one Muhammad Zubair on the charges of child stealing. The MS of Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Dr Anwar Khawaja, told The News that Hamida Bibi, wife of Muhammad Zubair, a warden in the CDGK, had delivered a baby girl on Sunday morning. At the same time, Kulsoom, wife of Zia-ur-Rehman, delivered a baby boy, but instead of getting their boy, they were given a baby girl while Zubair and his wife, Hamida Bibi, took Rehman’s baby boy.
“The wife of Zia-ur-Rehman raised a hue and cry after learning that instead of their baby boy, they were given the baby girl while the city warden and his wife escaped with the baby boy,” he said. As the matter was reported to the police and as the media started beaming the story, Zubair surrendered himself to the police on Monday morning, the MS said.
He said the couple had told the police that owing to some misunderstanding, they took the baby boy, but as soon as they realised their mistake they returned the child.
The woman police, who are investigating the case, have arrested Zubair. The FIR against the couple had been lodged at the Arambagh police station by the aggrieved family.
Rehman told The News that they had been jubilant over having gotten their baby back and were extremely thankful to Almighty Allah for His blessings. “Muhammad Zubair says he mistakenly took away our baby. Now the case is with the police, but we want to forgive him and his wife for their mistake as Allah Almighty asks people to forgive others.”
Police said they would seek the physical remand of the accused soon. The administration of the hospital has suspended four of its staff members on their alleged involvement and negligence. The MS told The News that he had suspended staff nurses Robina Yousuf, Shamim Victor, Naeem and Naheed Tahir on their alleged negligence.
