Karachi: Bandits loot Rs 9.6 million cash from bank
KARACHI: Four armed robbers looted around Rs 9.6 million cash, including foreign currency, from a private bank branch within SITE police station limits here on Wednesday.
Police officials said the style of the robbery indicated that security guards and bank staff could be involved in the looting and in the first phase, the police had detained security guards who were at the bank at the time of robbery because of their possible involvement and started questioning.
Officials further said the robbers took at least five hours in the robbery. Four armed men entered the bank at 12:00am and escaped at around 05:00am. They disclosed when the staff members of the bank arrived as per routine duty on Wednesday morning and found two security guards, namely Murtaza and Naseem, tied with the rope along with the chairs and can’t move or say anything.
Later the police was also called at the scene. The strong room of the bank was also damaged as according to security guards, the robbers came along with gas cutters, drills and other equipments. The security guards said that they were asleep when some four men came and wake them up while reminding them the Sehri timing. They said that as soon as they wake up and opened the gate for the preparation of Sehri, armed men suddenly entered in the bank and held them hostage at gunpoint.
However, after estimating the lost, it was cleared that the robbers looted Rs 6.6 million and US dollars worth Rs 3 million. Robbers also took away the DVR system and cameras’ footage along with them while fleeing.
It was the third bank heist within two weeks as earlier Rs 3.3 million were robbed from the branch of a private bank in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on July 29 while Rs 4.6 million in Malir’s bank on Aug 5. Officials feared more bank robberies.
DSP Zahid Hussain said that the police had initially detained the two security guards as they might have been involved in the robbery and it was necessary to question them.
He said that apart from these two security guards, four more security guards and bank staff members would also be questioned. Officer further said that all the four armed men wore Shalwar Kameez and three of them were veiled while one of them was unveiled and had small beard. He said that according to initial reports, robbers arrived in a car and also escaped in it. He, however, said that the sketches of the suspects were being made with the help of the security guards and authorities concerned had also been informed about the serial number of the foreign currency. The case was being registered on behalf of the bank manager Abbas.
