Karachi: SC grants bail in bank fraud case
KARACHI: A division bench of the Supreme Court (SC) here Thursday granted bail to an ex-bank employee against surety of Rs 1.5 million in a bank fraud case. The bench, comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Ghulam Rubbani, granted bail to accused Syed Maqsood Ahmed.
The accused along with other five, is facing charges of bank fraud amounting to Rs 70.179 million. The council of the accused Qazi Khalid Ali, Advocate argued that his client is in jail from Nov 13, 2009 and his case is still pending in the trial court. He argued, “Under the law, if any accused remained in jail for more than one year and the trial court could not decide his case, he may be released on bail”. The accused and five others are facing charges of misappropriation and embezzlement of Rs 70.179 million during their posting at Garden Road Branch of Habib Bank Ltd. They were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on Aug 5,2009. Their case is still pending with Accountability Court No 5, Karachi.
