One dead, six hurt in Hunza riots
GILGIT: Clashes between protesters and police left at least one person dead while six others were injured in Hunza on Thursday, officials said. The protesters also torched the Hunza Police Station, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) House and a government rest house besides a police mobile van, police said from Hunza. Reports suggest Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Babar was also injured when a protester threw a stone at him.
The clash erupted after some affectees of Attabad Lake tried to receive compensation money from a local bank in Hunza, but weren’t paid the amount due to lack of funds, said witnesses. The affectees started a protest after coming out of the bank, chanting slogans against the chief minister who was due to arrive there shortly from Nagar.
Police tried to disperse the crowd and a protester hit the DSP with a stone, leaving him injured, and prompting police to open fire. Asad Zamin, Deputy Commissioner Gilgit said, one person died as a result of the firing while six others were injured. “Three of the injured belong to the government side while the remaining three are civilians,” he said. As news of the killing spread, people in Gilgit blocked a major highway disrupting traffic for several hours.
