Karachi: One-year-old abducted from NICH
Karachi: The abduction of newborn and young children continues from public hospitals in Karachi, as another one-year-old boy, who was admitted at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) for the treatment of kidney ailment, was abducted on Saturday from the medical ward of the hospital.
One-year-old Junaid, son of Javed, was having kidney problems and his parents had taken him to NICH on August 11 and since then he was undergoing medical treatment at the hospital until Saturday morning when an unknown woman along with a male abducted him from the ward, relatives of the abducted child told The News.
Junaid is not the first child to have been abducted from a public hospital in the city, as a newly-born male baby was taken away by the parents of another newly-born baby girl from Sobhraj Maternity Hospital Karachi a couple of weeks ago.
The child was, however, returned to his parents after police were involved by the abducted child’s parents. Similarly, a newborn was abducted from Civil Hospital Karachi on March 1, a couple of days after his birth, and his parents Ghulam Farid and Jamila are still looking for their abducted child despite lodging an FIR with the concerned police.
Sources in the Health Department revealed that around four newly-born babies have been abducted from public hospitals in the city during the last one year and in most of the cases hospital staff was found involved in stealing the babies from the health facilities.
In this fresh abduction case from the NICH, the infant was taken away in the broad day light from the crowded medical ward of the NICH where scores of nurses, paramedical staff, doctors and attendants of the children were present at the hospital premises.
Mubin Ahmed, a relative of the child, said that the child’s grandmother Karim Bibi was with Junaid at NICH’s medical ward and she was preparing milk for the child when, according to her, a young woman and a young person, who get themselves acquainted with her sometime back, took away the child in the morning.
“The hospital administration is not cooperating at all. They say that the parents and attendants are supposed to protect their child. They also say that they have informed the police and they are investigating,” Mubin Ahmed, an uncle of the abducted child said.
SHO Saddar police station Inspector Tassawar Amir confirmed to The News that a child had been abducted from the NICH on Saturday morning and said that they were investigating the case.
“The complainant has given us an application for the registration of the case and we have sent our investigators to the NICH. A case will be registered after initial findings and preliminary investigation,” he added.
Director NICH Prof. Jamal Raza could not be approached despite repeated attempts but he had earlier told media that NICH administration was not responsible for the protection of the children neither it was involved in any way in the crime.
“This was the matter between two women and they can best answer as to how the child disappeared from the hospital,” he told Geo News.
