Swindler gangs active in City
LAHORE: Several swindler gangs are active in the Punjab Capital and have killed over 40 persons including women, young girls and innocent people at different public places during the current year.
Cenerally, swindlers use three most common drugs – alcohol, GHB and Rohypnol – to make their prey unconscious. After mixing these drugs in drinking water, soup or biscuits and feeding to their preys, the swindlers can easily either loot the victims or can rape them.
According to the modus operandi, mostly swindlers gangs commit crime in disguise as somewhere they pretend to be the agents of any secret or other law enforcement agency.
Official statistics of the City Police, available with this reporter, shows male and female swindlers gangs are involved in committing crimes in Tibi City, Lorry Adda, Azam Cloth and Shoes Market in Masti Gate, Truck Adda, Data Darbar, Badshahi Mosque, Landa Bazaar in Nulakha, Garhi Shahu, Minar-e-Pakistan, Sabzi Mandi, Sherakot, Nawankot, Gulshan-e-Ravi and etc.
Ironically, mostly cases go unreported as the victims – belonging to far flung areas – often refuse to get lodged FIRs as they avoid pursuing the case. However, reported data shows one or two cases of swindling are commonly reported with each aforementioned police precincts per month. Talking to The Nation, a top cop also admitted that the City Police had no other strategy to round up the swindlers except those cases, which were lodged and further action was taken. He said over 42 persons in different parts of the City had died/killed after falling prey to the swindlers during the current year.
Police officers told this scribe that on Aug 27, a 25-year-old Imran Hanif and his family was coming to the City to celebrate Eid but was deprived of its valuables. He was offered intoxicated sweet by a swindler in the bus and was reported fainted near Haider Sain Darbar. He was shifted to Nawaz Sharif Hospital where the doctors confirmed that he was poisoned by a swindler. Similarly, Nazeer Khan, 51, was found unconscious near Multan Road in Sundar Police Station limits and was shifted to Jinnah Hospital on the same day.
Police sources said a few days before Eid four accused namely Irfan, Ahmed, Waleed and Hashim arrived in the City following some people from the airport and looted them at a deserted area. Last month a 35-year-old man was found dead in Mozang police area and later the doctors of Mozang Public Hospital said he was swindled to death. A swindler deprived a lady doctor of her gold jewelry and a cellphone at the Surgical Unit-II of Shaikh Zayed Hospital on Aug 25.
A horrible incident took place in Nulakha area where a 15-year-old girl, hailing from Checawatni, died after she was gang-raped by some swindlers before Eid.
SHO Lorry Adda Inspector Sajjad Goraya, an officer who has investigated few cases of this nature, told that swindlers adopt various modus operandi to hunt their prey. “Commonly swindlers use drugs, which are easily available with the local market to loot the citizens”, he added. He said swindlers work in a big network as they start chasing their preys from Multan, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the travellers from far flung areas coming to the Punjab Capital.
“Yes, of course mostly are arrested after two to three crime bids but unfortunately the victims avoid to lodge FIRs against them due to certain reasons,” Goraya remarked.
