Karachi: 48 target killers held in surgical operation: police
KARACHI: At least 48 target killers have been arrested and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition has been recovered by the police during the ongoing surgical operation.
Additional Inspector-General of Police Saud Ahmed Mirza made this announcement at a briefing to journalists on Monday.
He said that during 2011, the Karachi police arrested 140 suspects, including target killers, and detected 217 cases. Moreover, from June 18 to September 12, at least 61 suspects were arrested and 68 cases were detected, he added.
Mirza noted that during the surgical operation that started on August 18, the city police conducted 2,116 raids and arrested 1,478 suspects, including 48 target killers and 21 extortionists.
He said the police also recovered 27 Kalashnikovs, 470 pistols, 18 rifles, 18 repeaters and 253 hand grenades from the possession of the suspects, while the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also nabbed suspects and recovered nine Kalashnikovs, six pistols, one rifle and six hand grenades.
The additional IG stated that during two days, i.e. from September 11 to September 12, the police conducted 115 raids in various localities of the city and arrested 78 criminals, besides recovering six Kalashnikovs, 28 pistols, three repeaters, 253 hand grenades. The CID also carried out three raids and arrested 11 suspects and seized eight Kalashnikovs, three pistols, six hand grenades and one rifle.
Mirza said that during the nine months 1,583 persons were killed, of them 125 were killed in January, 92 in February, 220 in March, 166 in April, 144 in May, 215 in June, 325 in July, 258 in August and 38 persons were killed in September. The 468 people became victims of target killings.
