Islamabad: Cop, prisoner injured at district court firing
Islamabad: An inmate and a cop were wounded in a shootout by unknown gunmen in front of the court of additional district and sessions judge on Saturday morning. The assailants managed to escape from the scene.
The inmate was allegedly involved in kidnapping for ransom and murder and was taken to the district courts from Adiala Jail, a police spokesman said.
The police said that the prisoner, Rana Sarwat son of Mohammad Yaqoob, resident of Lahore, was taken to the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Syed Wajahat Hussain on Saturday morning in the murder case (FIR-108/2001, Bhara Kahu police station under section 302 PPC), adding, as the police officials took the accused out of the court after the case proceeding, two gunmen appeared outside the security-wall and targeted the accused with automatic gun but the constable of the special squad of Line Headquarters, Rafaqat Hussain, who was deployed to produce the accused before the court, came in between the target accused Sarwat and the assailants and sustained two bullets, which crossed his stomach, however, the accused sustained a bullet in his leg.
The people witnessed the episode, said that the attackers accomplished their task and fled away towards the parking lot of the district courts and disappeared from the scene. The witnesses said that although, there were many police officials deployed on the security duties, but no one intercepted or chased the attackers.
SP (Saddar) Sajid Kiani when contacted told The News that according to the prosecution three people including Rana Sarwat, allegedly involved in illegal activities, Nasarullah and Sakhi Sultan, residents of Model Town, Lahore, kidnapped a trader Rana Hafiz resident of Upper Mall Lahore in 2001 and demanded Rs100 million as ransom from his heirs and later shifted him in a hideout in Bhara Kahu, Islamabad. The alleged captors held him for over one month and kept him in chains, the SP said adding, in the meantime, Rana Hafiz managed to escape from the hideout with chains. While the two persons deployed for his supervision saw him running stared chasing him. The locals when saw that a chained person was running and two gunmen were chasing him, informed the police about the episode. The gunmen, chasing Rana Hafiz gunned him down before he reached the police, however, the police arrested both the gunmen and recovered weapons from their possession, Kiani said.
SP Sajid Kiani said that the police arrested two accused, but Sarwat escaped to USA, adding that two accused were later acquitted by the court of law.
He said that the Islamabad police sought help from the Interpol and managed to take him from USA to Bangkok and later the Interpol handed him over to the Pakistani Police in 2003. The SP said that although the police have not yet identified the attackers.
Station house officer (SHO) Margallah, Irshad Abrho when contacted by this correspondent said that different team have been sent to Lahore to arrest the assailants. He said that FIR has been lodged on the statement of the victim.
A spokesman for PIMS, Dr. Waseem Khawaja when contacted by this correspondent said that Sarwat and constable Rafaqat were stable.
