KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Monday granted bail to the Muhajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) Chairman Afaq Ahmed in a murder and attempt to murder case and directed the trial court to conclude the case within two months.
Afaq Ahmed was booked for the murder case of Muttahida Qaumi Movement activist Atiqur Rehman and injuring two others near the Nabi Bux police in June 2009. After granting of bail by the Sindh High Court, MQM-H leader for the first time since April 2004 is either acquitted or released on bail in cases that were opened or registered against them after the 2002.
In July this year, the police had also filed a statement before the Sindh High Court stating that MQM-H chief was nominated in nine cases but he was not put on trial by the police due to insufficient evidence.
Afaq counsel M Ilyas Khan and Mohammad Farooq contended before Sindh High Court that no evidence against the MQM-H chief has been found by the police and his client had nothing to do with the offence because he had been in jail since April 2004, and the FIR of the case was registered on June 20, 2009 for the exclusive reason of political enmity aimed to put the applicant behind the bar for stopping him to participate in the political activities.
