Web journalist killed in Lahore
LAHORE: Web editor of an online newspaper was killed by unidentified people at his brother’s house in Johar Town police precincts in the early hours of Friday.
He was identified as Faisal Qureshi, 28, a resident of house No 971, Block-A, Johar View Society. Police have registered a case against unidentified killer(s) with no clue so far. However, the family claimed that some activists of a political party had killed Faisal as he was receiving life threats for many days.
A police officer told this correspondent Faisal was a software engineering graduate living alone at his brother Shahid Qureshi’s house. According to the family, Faisal had not been not in contact with them for one and a half days. They claimed his elder brother Shahid Qureshi, editor of the online paper, contacted him but he did not respond. Shahid later contacted his brothers Zahid and Rashid and asked them to visit Faisal at Johar View Society, they added.
Zahid, younger brother of the victim, told the media at the crime scene that he visited the place late Thursday night and found the house locked. He said to his surprise, the lights were on. He said he and his brother Rashid observed blood spots in the garage when they entered the house after climbing the gate.
He said they immediately informed police who entered the house and found Faisal dead in a room on first floor. Police removed the body to morgue for autopsy. The police said the killer(s) had tortured Faisal and then stabbed him to death. Blood spots were also seen in other rooms.
Sadar Division SP Investigations Hassan Mushtaq Sukhaira told reporters at the crime scene they had started investigation after registering a case. He said they had collected circumstantial evidence including fingerprints and also recorded statements of locals. He said he was murdered on Thursday between 6:00 pm and 8pm. To a question, he said it would be premature to comment on the involvement of a political party in the case.
Zahid and Rashid told the media their elder brother Shahid Qureshi had published a report of a failed escape attempt of a politician a few weeks back. They claimed the victim and his brother Shahid had been receiving life threats. They said about a week ago, Faisal had started living at one of their houses in the Walled City after threats. They said the killer(s) had also taken away the mobile phone and laptop of Faisal. They said Faisal was unmarried and they had no enmity with anyone. Lahore Press Club office-bearers condemned the killing and demanded a thorough probe.
