Lahore: 3,416 gamblers arrested during last five months
LAHORE: The Lahore Police has arrested 3,416 gamblers and recovered the betting amount of Rs 4.75 million from their possession and has also taken action against drug peddlers.
As many as 4,476 dealers were arrested and 93 kilogrammes of heroine, 606 kilogrammes of charas, 9 kilogrammes of opium, 264 kilogrammes of hashish, 316 intoxicating pills, 424 injections and 37,801 bottles of liquor were recovered from their possession during the last five months.
According to a handout issued on Wednesday, CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir said that a special squad was being created to combat street crimes, under which police personnel on motorcycles would patrol various small streets of the city continuously. He said that police personnel of these squads would also be deputed in plainclothes at different markets and other sensitive places, for which a comprehensive plan was being chalked out.
He said patrolling on horses, for specified areas and markets, would also continue to keep a watchful eye on anti-social elements.
The CCPO said that every police officer had been directed to obtain maximum information about their concerned areas so that they could adopt a suitable strategy for maintenance of law and order there. The CCPO further said that special vigilance teams were also being created which would oversee the performance of the local police at the thana level. Ahmad Raza Tahir also said that a number of practical steps, along with a comprehensive monitoring system, were being introduced to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the police.
